BUCHANAN — Long-time boys basketball coach Red McBeth has been named the next varsity football coach at Buchanan High School.

Buchanan Athletic Director Fred Smith announced the decision Tuesday night.

McBeth succeeds Mike Kuntz, who stepped down last fall after three years at the helm of Buchanan Football.

McBeth is currently a Buchanan Middle School technology teacher. He is in his 13th year as the boys varsity basketball coach. Over that time he has had 10 winning seasons, including two MHSAA regional and three district titles.

McBeth is a Buchanan graduate who played football for the highly successful Mike Young. He has also served as an assistant coach under Frank Mucha, Joe Austin and Mike Kuntz. He is highly organized as a coach and emphasizes to his athletes to achieve excellence in the classroom, in the community and on the field.

“We are excited to have someone of Reid’s caliber to take over our tradition rich football program,” Smith said. “Reid is a product of Buchanan football and has been involved in the program since returning to teach at Buchanan in 1997. Reid’s belief in a hard work ethic will assure Buchanan’s continued success as we move into the new BCS Conference next fall.”
