BUCHANAN — Kevin Dey and the Buchanan boys basketball team had their best quarter in the third as the Bucks pulled away after halftime and posted a 61-44 Lakeland Conference win on Friday.

Dey scored all 14 of his points in the third with nine of those points coming during a 12-0 Buchanan run that gave the hosts a 36-22 lead with 6:11 left in the third quarter.

“He’s a streak guy,” said Buchanan coach Reid McBeth about Dey. “He’s 6-4 and a tough guy to guard on the perimeter.”

The Bucks stretched their lead to 49-31 entering the fourth quarter.

“Tough stretch,” said Brandywine coach Nathan Knapp about his team’s play in the third quarter. “We didn’t handle their (defensive) pressure coming out (after halftime).”

Brandywine had 10 of its 28 turnovers in the third quarter. Many of those turnovers turned into easy baskets for Buchanan.

“I think our constant pressure affected Brandywine and they didn’t knock down their free throws,” McBeth said.

The Bobcats finished 11-of-21 from the free throw line, including 5-of-11 in the third quarter.

Tyler Flynn scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots for the Bucks.

Austin Knapp scored 11 points and Andrew Duckett added 10 to lead the Bobcats, who last led in the game at 12-11 with 7:24 left in the second quarter.

“We’re 3-7 with our record in the first half (of the season),” Knapp said. “We want to do better in the second half and get ready for districts.”
