Dowagiac hosts Comstock Tuesday night

The holidays are now gone and hopefully the bad weather that caused cancellations on Tuesday and Wednesday because the schedule is pretty full from here on out.

Wrestling, girls and boys basketball teams have very few open dates as we head into mid-January until the end of the regular season next month.

This week’s schedule is full thanks to some make-up dates.

Dowagiac’s girls basketball team will play three times this week as it makes up its game with Cassopolis tonight at 7:15 p.m. and then travels to Comstock on Tuesday and Edwardsburg on Friday.

Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.

The new year did not get off to a great start for the Chieftains as they lost to defending Wolverine West Division champion Three Rivers Friday night. The worst part was that Dowagiac dressed only six players as second-year coach Floyd Foston benched six players who did not make it to practice over the holiday break.

“Hopefully it is a lesson learned,” Foston said.

The Rangers are 5-2 overall following their 36-18 win over Bridgman Thursday night.

One of Cassopolis’ two losses came at the hands of Buchanan, which also defeated Dowagiac earlier this season.

The Rangers lost to the Bucks 51-41, while the Chieftains fell to Buchanan 46-31 in the season opener for both teams.

The boys basketball team returned to action Friday night with a 56-46 win over Three Rivers.

Dowagiac steps out of West Division play Tuesday night when it hosts Comstock. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.

The Colts are just 1-6 on the season following a 51-41 Wolverine East Division loss to Allegan Jan. 10.

This is the final season in the Wolverine Conference for the Colts, who will join the Kalamazoo Valley Association next season.

Comstock’s only win of the season came at the Kalamazoo Loy Norrix Holiday Tournament where it defeated Brandywine 50-47.

Brandon Haller had 18 points for the Colts, who also got 10 points and 11 rebounds from Brian Barnes.

The Chieftains will wrap up the week by hosting Edwardsburg Friday night.
