Weather puts wrestling teams on hold

Weather may have an effect on whether or not area wrestling teams can compete Wednesday as scheduled.

With school cancelled Monday due to a blizzard and the possibility of there being no school Tuesdays due to sub-zero temperatures, there is a strong chance that matches will have to be postponed.

They will be postponed due to the fact that teams would not be able to hold weigh-ins. Schools also could decide to use on-site weigh-in.

If matches go on as scheduled, Dowagiac, Brandywine, Edwardsburg and Cassopolis are all slated for matches on Wednesday, while Niles will travel to Stevensville to wrestle Kalamazoo Central and Mattawan.

The Vikings are off to a great start with an 8-3 record. Their losses are all to ranked teams, including No. 1 Davidson.

Niles is ranked No. 3 in Division 2 according to michigangrappler.com.

The Vikings already own a victory over then No. 4-ranked Oxford and their only loss of the year was at the hands of No. 1-ranked Davidson.

Niles opened Big 16 West Division action with a pair of impressive wins over Portage Northern and Portage Central.

This past weekend, the Vikings captured the Muskegon Orchard View Invitational by placing 19 wrestlers, including four individual champions.

Winning titles for Niles were Andrew Flick (103), Josh Dayhuff (119), Fred Kemp (160) and Sean Craig (171).

Niles coach Todd Hesson is glad the match was moved back a day.

“This works out nice for us because we didn’t have a tournament for our ‘A’ team this weekend,” he said.
