One dead after vehicle strikes tree

One person died and another was critically injured during a one-vehicle accident early Tuesday morning in Milton Township.

The accident occurred on Bertrand Street just east of 21st Street around 2:05 a.m., according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The names of the driver and passenger involved in the crash are being withheld at this time until notification is made.

The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Bertrand Street at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. The driver was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for critical injuries sustained in the accident. The passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service, Niles Township Fire Department and Berrien County Sheriff’s Department assisted deputies at the scene.

Seat belts were worn at the time of accident, which remains under investigation at this time.
