The Dowagiac post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars would like to thank all who helped out with the Dec 7, “Shop with a Cop” at the Dowagiac Shopko, with a special thanks to the management and employees, who made the day for the children and all who volunteered. Also, the VFW would like to thank the Shopko Foundation for their generous donation, along with a donation from the Andy Anderson family and the Dowagiac VFW.

Ten children from our local schools, whose families do not have a lot for the holidays, were chosen for the program. The children must have had good grades and attendance to be picked.

The Dowagiac Police and Fire Departments volunteered to help the children shop for their families, and all purchases are wrapped and tagged for them for Christmas. Director of Public Safety Steve Grinnewald was picked by a young girl to help her shop. After most other children had completed their 30-minute shopping trip, Grinnewald noticed she had only one item in her shopping cart. She was a little shy, and was not sure of what to buy.

However, the mission was finally completed with much help from Grinnewald and his Family. It was a great time for everyone.

Afterwards, the children were escorted by police and fire vehicles to the Dowagiac VFW Post for pizza, as well as chance for children to run around and play games.

A few people inquired as to how to donate money for the children, as money becomes tighter for this great program. Anyone who might want to donate may do so by sending donation to Dowagiac VFW Post, 472 E.Division St. Donations will be set aside for this worthy program.
