A Dowagiac man was taken to the hospital Monday evening after the vehicle he was traveling in collided with a tree in Wayne Township, according to authorities with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Heriberto Contreras, 52, was transported Borgess Lee Memorial hospital in Dowagaic for minor injuries, authorities reported.

Deputies with the office responded to the crash at 7:24 p.m. They discovered that the driver of the vehicle, 32-year-old Harley Rose, also of Dowagiac, had lost control of the vehicle while traveling westbound on Gage Street, just west of Twin Lakes Road. The automobile ran off the roadway and struck a nearby tree.

Rose did not suffer any injuries.

Authorities with the office are still determining whether or not the two were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

Personnel with Wayne Township Fire, Pride Care Ambulance, Dowagiac Police Department and the Pokagon Tribal Police assisted Cass County deputies at the crash site. The sheriff’s office said they are continuing to investigate the accident.
