Late rally not enough for Dowagiac

Visiting Coloma outscored Dowagiac 13-0 in the second quarter to take control of the Wolverine Conference West Division girls basketball game to Friday night.

The Comets (2-1, 1-1 West) then had to withstand a furious late fourth quarter rally to hold off the Chieftains (1-3, 1-1 West) 30-25.

Dowagiac, playing without leading scorer Ciera Smith, struggled to find its offense in the half-court game, but used full-court pressure defense in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to force Coloma into numerous turnovers, which the Chieftains turned into easy baskets.

In the end, Coloma was able to score just enough points to hold off the Chieftains.

Jenna Faultersack had a game-high 17 points for The Comets.

Crieona Rodgers led Dowagiac with 11 points, including a big 3-pointer during the late run. Rayven Brown finished with eight points for Dowagiac.
