Niles snaps 23-game losing streak

The Niles girls basketball team won its first game in over a year as it routed visiting Buchanan 73-32 Thursday night.

A quick start and consistency helped the Vikings (1-0) make their season opener a success.

Niles jumped out to an 11-4 first quarter lead, which it extended to 29-13 by halftime.

The Vikings outscored the Bucks (1-1) 44-19 in the second half to blow the game open.

All 11 Niles players reached the scoring column Thursday night, led by Jazmin Brann’s game-high 18 points. The Vikings also got 12 points from Emily Gaines and nine points from Jaiden Rolan.

Niles forced the Bucks into 38 turnovers and outrebounded them 47-27.

Madison Prillwitz led Buchanan with 10 points. Jade Mosier added seven.

The Vikings are back in action tonight as they head to St. Joseph to open up Big 16 West Division play. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
