Sweet Comfort, which opened in April, will be holding its Christmas open house Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors will find a large variety of painted furniture, gift items, baby gifts, photos on canvas and much more. There will be many specials during the two-day event.

The store, which is owned by Donna Barlow, will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Barlow said that she opened the shop, along with Sharon Harden, because she loves to paint furniture and the building, located at 69175 M-62 South in Edwardsburg, had been empty for quite a while.

“I’ve known Sharon for years and we just decided to do it,” Barlow said. “We both were not doing anything, so it was just a good time in life for it.”

Harden handles the photographic artwork.

Sweet Comfort was not the original name of the store. “This and that” was already taken in Michigan, so Barlow decided on Sweet Comfort, although she said some people mistake it for a bakery.

“For me, these kind of furnishings are comfortable,” she said. “It just fit. It has a real cozy atmosphere.”

Regular hours for Sweet Comfort are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Being big Edwardsburg High School fans, Sweet Comfort also carries a variety of Eddies items for purchase.

While the business is off to a slow start, Barlow is pleased with how things are going. The furniture side of Sweet Comfort is doing well. She said that people bring in items to be painted on a regular basis.

“It is getting there,” she said. “We are definitely holding our own. We are getting new people continuously and we get repeats, which is even nicer.”
