Downtown Niles will kick off the Christmas season early with a holiday homecoming event Saturday, Nov. 30.

The city council on Monday gave the Niles Main Street Downtown Development Authority permission to conduct the event from 4-7 p.m.

Activities will include horse drawn carriage rides, musical presentations and refreshments. The route for the ride will be around the 100 block starting at the Four Flags Antique Mall to the right on Main Street and right on Sycamore before returning on Second Street.

A reserve police officer will assist with traffic control, costing the city $100.

Also Monday:

• Council members who won Thursday’s election were sworn in for duty. They were Robert Durm, Bill Weimer, Tim Skalla and Gretchen Bertschy. There were no changes to the council based on the election and all ran unopposed. Their terms expire in 2017.

• The council adopted a resolution supporting an application to the state for a stormwater/wastewater asset management grant in the amount of $2.4 million. If the city is awarded the grant, it would pay for planning and design services associated with storm water management, sanitary sewers and wastewater treatment.
