Turkey giveaway set for Thursday, Friday

An average Thanksgiving turkey can set a family back around $25.

However, members of a local credit union have the opportunity to get their bird, or ham, for free.

For the 11th straight year, Greater Niles Community Federal Credit Union will be giving away turkeys and hams at each of their three locations in Niles, Edwardsburg and Cassopolis.

The giveway runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Dave VanStrien, CEO, said the credit union plans to give away around 2,000 turkeys and 400 hams.

The leftovers will be distributed to local churches, schools, civic clubs and other charitable organizations.

“The credit union is a non-profit agency with the idea that we charge lower fees and interest rates and give it back to our members as a benefit,” VanStrien said. “It is just one way we give back to our members as an appreciation.”

One item will be given to each member family. Just show up to the credit union and provide your address.

Credit union locations are:

• Niles — 501 E. Main St.

• Cassopolis — 1050 E. State St.

• Edwardsburg — 68925 Michigan Highway 62
