ELKHART, Ind. — Lewis J. Hammontree, Sr., 78, of Elkhart, passed away at 1 a.m. Sunday Oct. 13, 2013 in his home. He was born Dec. 26, 1934 in Alma, Mich. to Lloyd and Fern (Schaffer) Hammontree.
On Feb. 18, 1955 in Cassopolis he married Maxine E. Engeseth. She survives along with three sons, Lewis J. (Jeanette) Hammontree, Jr., of Holly, Mich., Scott A. (Jayne) Hammontree of Elkhart and Dean A. (Marian) Hammontree of South Bend; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and one sister.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.
Lewis graduated from high school in Belding, Mich. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Three Rivers and enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and golfing. Lewis retired in 1995 from Bayer where he worked for 22 years as a welder and pipefitter.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the noon Friday service at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Bob Vale from the Osceola United Methodist Church will preside and burial will follow in Adamsville Cemetery.
