The Niles football team turned in another record-setting performance in a loss Friday night.

In a game that was delayed more than an hour by lighting, the Vikings ended up on the wrong end of a 54-26 loss to undefeated Portage Central.

In the loss, quarterback Darek Bullock-Mills eclipsed the school record for most passing yards in a single game as he went 26-of-38 for 466 yards. He also ran for 64 yards for a combined 530 yards of total offense.

Ra’Quon Glenn was on the receiving end of 17 of those passes for a school record 346 yards and three touchdowns.

Bullock-Mills becomes the second back-up quarterback to eclipse the school record for passing yards in a single game.

Joe Avance earlier this year also broke the record while playing in place of quarterterbacks Sean Craig and Alex Harpenau.

In the end, it was Niles’ inability to finish off drives or to stop the Mustangs offensively that proved to be the difference.

Portage Central (6-0) ran for 475 yards behind the two-headed attack of Jacob Allan and Jerrod Davis.

The Mustangs finished with 521 yards in total offense. Allan finished 164 yards and Davis 132.

“Right now we are giving away points,” Niles coach Antwon Jones said. “Once we stop that we will be alright. We are headed in the right direction. Last year if we would get behind we would shut down. This year our guys are finishing the game. They are not quiting.

“We are getting better and we are planning on winning these last three games. We plan on sending our seniors out with a winning record.”

The Vikings finish the year on the road against Mattawan Friday night, at Lakeshore Oct. 18 and at home against Portage Northern Oct. 25 for Senior Night.
