VICKSBURG — The Dowagiac freshmen football team dropped a 24-16 decision to host Vicksburg in its season opener Wednesday.

“Defensively we played pretty good but gave up three big plays on third down that all went for touchdowns,” Dowagiac coach Chad Perrin said. “Offensively we moved the ball pretty well, but had two key fumbles and an interception that stalled good drives out. ”

No individual statistics were provided.

The Dowagiac JV football team was also defeated by Vicksburg 18-6 Wednesday night.

The Chieftains scored first and then gave up 18 unanswered points to the Bulldogs.

“The big story was turnovers,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We had three and anytime you go minus three it is difficult to win football games. We also had several penalties at costly times that stopped good drives.

“We need to learn from this game, make sure we don’t make the same mistakes and get ready for next week.”

Jacob Davis scored the lone touchdown for Dowagiac.
