Big weekend ahead for area teams

Rain washed out the season opener for the Brandywine tennis team Thursday.

The Bobcats will try again Saturday as they will join Niles in competing in the South Bend St. Joe tournament at Leeper Park. Play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Niles volleyball and golf teams will both be in action today.

The Vikings will take part in the Gull Lake Invitational volleyball tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m., while the golf team will head to Battle Creek to compete in the Lakeview Spartan Invitational.

The Brandywine soccer team will open its season by hosting Grace Christian today at 5:30 p.m.

Both the Vikings and Bobcats will be in action Saturday as they co-host the VanDenBerg Invitational soccer tournament.

Buchanan will take on host Niles at 10 a.m., while Cassopolis will face the host Bobcats, also at 10 a.m.

The championship match will be played at Niles this year beginning at noon. The consolation match, also at noon, will be played at Brandywine.

Admission is $5 per person. No passes will be accepted.

Also on Saturday, Niles will host the Viking Stampede at the Dowagiac Middle School cross country course.

The first race of the day is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

The Brandywine cross country team will head across the boarder to run in the South Bend Stampede. That is also slated to begin at 9 a.m.

The Bobcats’ volleyball team will head to Kalamazoo to compete in the Hackett Invitational beginning at 8:30 a.m.
