Niles man survives plane crash

A Niles man walked away uninjured after his ultra light plane crash-landed in Berrien Township Sunday morning.

Brian Bowen, the pilot, was checked by paramedics at the scene.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department responded to a plane crash in Berrien Township at 9:35 a.m. A small ultra light plane piloted by Bowen crashed into a wooded field east of a residence located at 10715 Old US-31.

Bowen had left from the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport in Niles and was circling to return to the airport when his plane engine stopped. Bowen’s plane then crash landed into a field area dotted with small trees. The plane sustained moderate damage.

Berrien Springs Police, Eau Claire Fire and Medic 1 Ambulance assisted.
