A 27-year-old man is in custody after troopers with the Michigan State Police Niles Post found an AK-47 in the man’s vehicle during a routine traffic stop.

The driver, whose name is not being released pending arraignment, was pulled over in the 700 block of McAllister in Benton Harbor at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Before police could make contact with the driver, the driver exited his vehicle and began walking away from the scene. The driver, who ignored repeated commands to stop, attempted to escape, forcing police to use a taser.

According to a police, the driver was intoxicated, driving while his license was suspended and wanted on several outstanding warrants.

A vehicle search revealed an AK-47 assault rifle lying on the front passenger seat, uncased and unloaded. It has not been reported stolen.
