Harlyne Hilliker “Holly” Joy, 77, passed away after a brief illness June 2, 2013, in Ocala, Fla., en route to her home in Indianapolis.

Mrs. Joy was born in Riverside, Calif., and moved to Bloomington, Ind., when she was 5. She attended grade school and University High School in Bloomington. She graduated from St. Vincent Nursing School in 1957 as a registered nurse.

Later in life, she earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in Maine and an MBA from Indiana University.

She practiced and taught nursing in Dowagiac and later became a certified nursing home administrator.

Retiring in 1985, Mrs. Joy and her husband, Oliver, bought a trawler and moved to Florida, where they lived on board and cruised for seven years.

After cruising, they moved to Bloomington, where Mrs. Joy spent much of her childhood and, subsequently, to Indianapolis to be nearer her daughter’s family and grandchildren.

Mrs. Joy is survived by her loving husband, Oliver Joy; four children, Michael (Donya) Geagan, Thomas Geagan, Laura Geagan and Helen (Doug) Follett; seven grandchildren, Katherine Thorpe, Karla, Sophie and Maria Geagan and Nicholas, Alexander and Kelly Follett; and two stepsons, Oliver Jr. and Clayton Joy.

She was an avid reader and traveler, visiting London several times and China, Thailand, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

She also enjoyed needlepoint and, most of all, spoiling her grandchildren.

She was a tutor in the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program at Pike Schools for seven years.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan in Speedway, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to “MSD Pike Township, Holly Joy Memorial Fund” at 6901 Zionsville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

Funds will go to the Oasis tutoring program.
