Dowagiac misses state finals by a stroke

MARSHALL – The Dowagiac golf team missed qualifying for the Division 3 state golf finals by a single stroke at The Medalist Golf Club Thursday.
The Chieftains finished with a 334, which was one stroke back of the third and final qualifying spot, which went to Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian, which shot 333.
Grand Rapids West Catholic won the regional championship with a 322. Coloma finished second with a 331.
Dowagiac’s Christian Hess birdied the second playoff hole to earn the third and final individual qualifying spot. He tied with Vermontville Maple Valley’s Rage Sheldon. Both finished regulation tied at 81.
Hess also averted the retirement of Dowagiac coach Van Johnson for another week.
Johnson and Hess will travel to Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek next weekend for the Division 3 state finals.
