Niles senior Alec Brown, who recently signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Lake Michigan College, has been named Academic All-State for the 2012-13 season.

To qualify for the honor, Brown had to be nominated by Niles coach Todd Pawielski and have a GPA of at least 3.5. He also had to be named to either the Associated Press, Detroit News, Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan or the Detroit Free Press All-State teams.

Brown was one of 47 players to receive Academic All-State. He had a grade point average of 3.86.

He is the second Niles player in the last two years to earn the award. Austin Parks was named Academic All-State in 2012.

Brown averaged 20 points per game last season for the Vikings, with a high of 36.

“Alec continues to impress,” Pawielski said. “His tremendous season on the court was made possible by the dedication he showed in the classroom. He is an outstanding player and young man. We will miss him at Niles High School.”
