EDWARDSBURG – The Division 2 District Baseball Tournament had a Wolverine Conference West feel to it in Edwardsburg Saturday.

And as it turned out, the same two teams that squared off for the Wolverine Conference championship two weeks ago battled it out for the district title, but with much different results.

Edwardsburg won the first league tournament with a 10-7 victory over Berrrien Springs. Both teams advanced to Saturday’s championship game by defeating Lakeshore (14-4) and Dowagiac (1-0) respectively.

The Eddies (19-9) took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning, but could not hold on as the Shamrocks (20-8) tied the score with a run in the fifth and then scored three times in the sixth to gain some revenge and take the district title 4-1.

The Shamrocks’ Everett Shembarger turned in a solid effort on the mound, keeping the game close. He then delivered the game-winning two-run single in the sixth to lead Berrien Springs to the title.

The Shamrocks will head to Stevensville Saturday for the Division 2 regional where it will face No-9-ranked South Haven in the first game, another Wolverine West Division foe.

Edwardsburg had its chances early against Shembarger, but could only produce one run. The Eddies had the bases loaded with one out in both the first and second innings.

Once the game was tied, Kyle Rago, who was the winning in the first game against the Chieftains, came on and ended up with the victory to improve to 9-1 on the season. Rago worked the final three innings for Berrien Springs.

Jordon Bosse went the distance and took the loss for Edwardsburg.

Dowagiac…0

Berrien Springs…1

A passed ball with a runner at third proved to be the difference in the first game of the day as Berrien Springs edged Dowagiac 1-0.

The Chieftains’ Cal Cox and the Shamrocks’ Rago went toe-to-toe for seven innings.

Rago tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts, while Cox gave up five hits and struck out 10. It was his third 1-0 loss of the season.

“Two great pitchers,” Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said. “Cal coming off three days rest did a phenomenal job. We’re going to miss him. The kids tried hard. We just couldn’t score any runs.”

Lakeshore…4

Edwardsburg…14

The Eddies banged out 13 hits in defeating Lakeshore 14-4 in the second semifinal.

Jackson Gaideski had three hits and Jordan Bosse, Dalton Raymond and Garett Bronkema all had two hits.

Raymond went the distance, tossing a four-hitter to pick up the victory.
