Vivian J. Dungey, 79, of Cassopolis, made her heavenly ascension on Saturday, May 25, 2013, in Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo with her family at her side.

Vivian was born Dec. 14, 1933, to Harry and Taddie Mae (Evans) Lindsey. 

 

She married William Norman Dungey Aug.12, 1955, in Chicago, and their union was blessed with two children. He preceded her in death in 2001. She was also preceded by her parents and one brother, Harold Lindsey.  

 

Vivian was the first black female detective/ lab technician in the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and in southwest Michigan. She loved the Lord. Her hobby was shopping, shopping and shopping. 

 

As a young woman she was a singer on the Chitlin’ Circuit. She sang with Little Richard and Junior Walker. She will be remembered for the stylish way she dressed and carried herself. Vivian was a member of the House of Prayer Community Church, Cassopolis, until her passing.

 

Vivian will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by: one daughter, Janine (Steven) Van Cleave of Indianapolis; one son, William (Marinella) Dungey Jr. of Los Angeles; five grandchildren, Cara (Lamanche’) Ware of Villa Rica, Ga., Kyeela Conner of Cassopolis, Stefone Conner of Cassopolis, Leoni Dungey of San Bernadino, Calif., and William N. Dungey III of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler Dungey, Azavier Dungey, Tatiana Ware, Raiden Cifuentes, Jakya Conner, Ziheir Conner and Zariah Conner; and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

Family and friends will gather Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis. Funeral services will be Friday with calling from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 in Church of Cassopolis, 520 Pearl St., Cassopolis, with the Rev. Raymond Massey officiating. Mrs. Dungey will be laid to rest beside her late husband, William Sr., in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Cassopolis.
