Junior Nathan Anders was a four-time champion Tuesday for the Brandywine boys track team at the Lakeland Conference Meet.

But individual success was secondary to Anders as he was more excited to be part of a conference championship team.

The Bobcats won the meet title with 135 points and that clinched them the outright conference title for the first time since 2007. Brandywine, which finished 3-0 in dual meets during the regular season, placed second in the conference the past two years. Bridgman placed second on Tuesday with 47 points.

Cassopolis is the conference’s outright girls champion after winning the meet with 61 points. The Rangers were 3-0 during regular season dual meets. Brandywine placed second with 47 points.

“I feel like it’s about time,” said Anders about winning the league crown. “Our team works hard and we like to win because it cheers up our coach more.”

Brandywine track coach Terry Borr had a smile on his face watching Anders finish first in the 110-meter hurdles, long jump, 300-meter hurdles and 1,600-meter relay.

“It feels good,” Anders said about being a four-time conference champion. “I always have a lot of support from my team. They always cheer me on. Even friends from the other teams will cheer me on. It’s really friendly competition.”

It’s the first time Anders has been a conference champion in those events.

“I credit my success to my coach, the 4 x 4 relay team that is going to state, and to my day (Kent) who holds the record for the 300 hurdles (38.9 in 1980) at the school. He has the record for now.”

Brandywine’s Courtlan Gordon was a three-time winner, placing first in the 200 meters, 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay). Two-time winners were Evan Hartman (discus and shot put), Alex Ulrickson (3,200 relay, 800), Michael Robbins (1,600, 3,200 relay) and Cody Brackett (1,600 relay, 800 relay).

Hartman is the defending state and conference champion in the discus.

“I didn’t do too bad for a smaller meet coming off a bigger (regional) meet,” said Hartman. “It’s tougher because you don’t have the competiton with you, but I can’t be too upset with what I did today.”

Hartman was asked what it meant to him to be a conference champ in the discus and shot put.

“It’s nice, but I wish I could have done it last year when we had the bigger conference,” Hartman said.

For Borr, Tuesday’s performances capped a great conference season.

“We’ve been right there,” said Borr about recent finishes in the league. “This is a great group of kids. We came in today to perform well and get as many of our kids as we could first place medals because our kids have worked so hard all year. We had pretty good balance today. Our top dogs did what they needed to do. We placed 1-2-3 in both hurdle events and that’s big for us. We’ve just got an all-around great team.”

Nakiela Sinclair was the top performer for the Cassopolis girls team, finishing first in the three events (1,600 relay, discus, 800 relay).

Two-time winners for the Rangers were Kaylyn Forrest (800 relay, 400 relay), Sheridan Curry (800 relay, 1,600 relay) and Emily Cutting (1,600 relay, 3,200 relay).

“Great, wonderful,” said Cassopolis girls track coach Janice Gatson about her team’s showing on Tuesday. “We had some great times. As a team, our 4 x 8 team (Emily Cutting, Melody Cutting, Jacqueline Kelley-Cogdell, Monica Ward) ran their best time of the season today.”

Buchanan’s Brianna Dinneen was a four-time champion, finishing first in the 400 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump. Dinneen finished her high school career as a four-time conference in the 100 and and a three-time conference champion in the 400.
