VICKSBURG — A nine-run first inning was all Edwardsburg needed to advance to the second round of the Wolverine Conference Baseball Tournament.
The Eddies defeated Vicksburg 9-5 Tuesday to advance to Saturday’s semifinal at 10 a.m. at South Haven, which blanked Comstock 6-0.
The championship game is scheduled for approximately 3 p.m.
In the top of the first, Edwardsburg got a walk and a double from Jordan Bosse, who came around to score the first run on a ground out by Michael Kempton.
Dalton Raymond singled to make it 2-0 and following a walk, Garret Bronkema doubled home Raymond. Jackson Gaideski lifted a ball to centerfield, which allowed courtesy runner Derek Pierce to tag up and score the inning’s fourth run.
Taylor Reynolds singled home the fifth run, while Bosse doubled again to make it 7-0 in favor of the Eddies. Kempton followed with a two-run single to complete the scoring.
“The kids came out swinging the bats,” Edwardsburg coach A.J. Gaideski said. “It made it easy for our pitchers. All they had to do was come out and throw strikes and make them get themselves out.”
Bosse was 4-for-4 with the two doubles and two RBIs. Raymond was 2-for-4, while Kempton drove in three runs.
“He (Bosse) had a couple of real nice doubles,” Gaideski said.
Dalton, who picked up the victory, worked the first four innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and just one walk. Bosse pitched the final three innings to earn a save He struck out eight and did not allow a run, a hit or a walk.
