COLOMA – Struggling to make routine plays once again hurt the Dowagiac softball team against a quality opponent Friday.

The visiting Chieftains were swept by Coloma 6-4 and 11-0. Dowagiac had a 4-1 lead in the first game, but could not hold on.

“Once again we were competitive against a very good team and gave ourselves a chance to win, but couldn’t make basic plays when the time came,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “I fee we gave away four runs in the first game after taking a 4-1 lead on Kourtney’s (Mitchell) base clearing double.

“In the second game, we just weren’t in it from the beginning and it seemed Coloma sensed that and kept putting the pressure on us to make the game get out of hand.”

Mitchell picked up three RBIs in the first game, while Corinne Kasper added a double.

Kasper also doubled in the nightcap for one of the Chieftains’ two hits.
