For the sixth time in the last night years, the Brandywine tennis team is the Lakeland Conference champion.

This year’s title was a bit different because there were only four teams in the league. Rain washed out the remaining matches last Thursday and Bridgman withdrew from Monday’s make-up to compete in the Kalamazoo Valley Association tourney, which was postponed by weather Saturday.

That left the Bobcats, Buchanan and Cassopolis to slug it out at Plym Park Monday afternoon.

Brandywine easily won the championship as it swept all eight flights and scored 32 points. Buchanan was second with 24 and Cassopolis third with 16. Bridgman amassed eight points on the first day of competition and finished fourth.

Mackenzie Shelton was the lone repeat champion for the Bobcats. Shelton won the No. 3 doubles championship last season with teammate Carlie Newman.

This year she won the No. 2 doubles title with teammate Ashley DeJonge.

Victoria Knight was a runner-up in 2012, but captured the No. 4 singles championship Monday.

Jessy Cooper and Rachel Gipson were runners-up last season to Edwardsburg, but had no trouble defeating Buchanan’s Dara Molica and Rose Murdock for the No. 1 doubles crown this year.

Brandywine’s Joe Marazita was named Coach of the Year.
