CASSOPOLIS — Cass County commissioners May 2 appointed Ken Krause to the Historical Commission to finish Garold Engle’s term through July 1.

Engle submitted his resignation April 1 due to health problems.

Krause, of Penn Road, Cassopolis, came to the county 52 years ago from Grand Rapids. He has served on the Council on Aging board for 10 years.

“I certainly remember when the jail was taken down,” Krause replied when Vice Chair Bernie Williamson, R-Jefferson Township, asked him about repurposing the 1899 courthouse. “It took away part of the courthouse and we went from 28 prisoners to 125. A lot happened with that transaction. This courthouse is still pretty meaningful to me and I like it. I’m interested in seeing what happens. I’ve been involved quite a bit in the Bonine House” being restored outside Vandalia.
