ST. JOSEPH — Dowagiac’s Dontel Highsmith was one of the stars of the 56th annual Rotary Track Meet held at Dickenson Stadium Friday night.

Highsmith won the 100-meters, the long jump and rallied the Chieftains’ 400-meter relay team to victory. He also placed fourth in the high jump.

Highsmith ran a time of 11.12 in the 100-meters and leaped 21-6 1/2 in the long jump. He cleared 5-9 in the high jump.

But his best performance of the night came in the 400-meter relay.

Highsmith had to come-from-behind in the anchor leg of the relay to edged Benton Harbor for the championship by six one-hundredths of a second — 45.36 to 45.42.

The rest of the game consisted of Lucas Petro, Caleb Zimmerman and Todd McIntyre.

The Chieftains didn’t have any winners in the girls portion of the meet, but they did have some solid performances.

Creona Rodgers finished second in the long jump (15-10 1/4) and Nijah Russell in the 100- and 200-meters where she finished second in both. In the 100, she posted a time of 12.62, while in the 200 her time was 25.9.
