Vikings start busy weekend with sweep

The Niles baseball team opened a busy weekend with a sweep of visiting Coloma in non-conference play Friday

The Vikings outlasted the Comets in the first game after six lead changes, squeaking out a 5-4 win at Niles High School.

Niles finally managed to grab the lead with a big seventh inning.

The Vikings went up for good on a two-run home run by Chris Mangus, plating Tate Rudlaff.

Mangus racked up three RBIs on two hits for Niles.

Tyler Clutter got the win for the Vikings. He allowed four runs over seven innings. Clutter struck out two, walked one and gave up six hits.

In the top of the third, Coloma grabbed the early lead, 1-0.

Niles answered Coloma with three runs of its own in the third. The Vikings scored on an RBI double by Mangus and a two-run home run by Mitchell Dehn.

Niles jumped out to an early lead on Coloma in the nightcap and captured a 10-0 victory.

Six runs in the first three innings allowed the Vikings to put the game away early.

An RBI single by Dehn and an RBI triple by Hunter Holzapfel during the first inning and a wild pitch in the second inning supplied the early offense for Niles.

Dehn racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Vikings.

Niles’ Rudlaff kept Coloma off the scoreboard for all five innings he was on the hill. He pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out two.
