RICHLAND — The Niles softball team went 2-1 to finish second at the Gull Lake Invitational Saturday.

The Vikings defeated Lansing Everett 15-0 before the pitching of Megan Mckeel and home runs by Tala Gentry and Kylee Myers.

Niles also blanked Hasting 15-0 with Molly VanDeKeere getting the shutout.

In the finals, the Vikings were defeated by Marine City 6-4.

VanDeKeere took the loss for Niles.

“I thought we did our jobs the first two games and did everything good teams do to win,” Niles coach Ryan Frontczak said. “We made all the plays and played error free softball. I am proud of my girls. We battled in the championship game and played well. We had our chance with runners in scoring position and just did not get them in.”
