Niles splits with Indians, Trojans

The Niles baseball team made up a pair of games Saturday.

The Vikings lost to visiting South Bend St. Joe Saturday morning before rebounding to defeat visiting Sturgis 10-6 in the afternoon.

In the first game, Matt Miller and Taylor Weldy had the only hits for the Vikings.

Niles beat Sturgis 10-6 behind Tate Rudlaff, who collected three hits.

He doubled in the third inning and singled in the first and fifth innings.

Jake Brentlinger got the win for the Vikings. He allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings. Brentlinger struck out five, walked one and gave up three hits.

Niles closer Chris Mangus put away the final eight outs to record the save.

Sturgis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third.

The Vikings scored one run of their own in the third. Niles scored on an RBI single by Connor Glick.

Niles didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring four runs in the fourth inning when they scored on an RBI double by Brad Miller, a two-run single by Hunter Holzapfel and a walk by Mangus.

Three runs in the top of the fifth helped Sturgis close its deficit to 5-4. An error, a fielder’s choice, and an RBI single by Chance Stewart gave Sturgis life.

The Vikings survived Sturgis’ surge and put up three runs of their own in the fifth. Niles scored on a sacrifice fly by Weldy, an RBI single by Rudlaff and an RBI single by Holzapfel.

Two runs in the top of the sixth helped Sturgis close its deficit to 8-6.

Niles responded with two runs in the sixth. The Vikings scored on a two-run error.
