The Dowagiac golf team successfully defended its home course and in the process opened up a bit of a lead in the Wolverine Conference West Division standings.

The Chieftains, who have won two of the first three jamborees, shot 166 to easily best runner-up Edwardsburg, which shot 180.

Hampshire Country Club is also the home course of the Eddies.

“We did it in fine style,” Dowagiac coach Van Johnson said about winning at home. “They played well in spots. We didn’t play well as a team, but our top three played really well. They are coming together score wise, but it wasn’t a pretty win.”

Three Rivers finished third after also shooting 180. The fifth-man tiebreaker went to Edwardsburg. Coloma, which won the first jamboree of the year, was fourth and now trails Dowagiac by three points in the overall standings.

South Haven finished fifth and Berrien Springs sixth.

“I want to thank Edwardsburg and Three Rivers for helping us out,” Johnson laughed. “Now the kids can relax a little. We don’t have any pressure on us other than their self-imposed pressure. They are playing well. I think we can be better if we make a few adjustments to the line-up. The name of the game is deciding the right combination of players for the particular day. But overall, I would have to say we are pleased.”

The Chieftains’ Christian Hess earned medalist honors with a 39. Dowagiac also got a pair of 40s from Jordan Juday and Andrew Wild. Paul Lamphere shot 47 for the Chieftains.

The Eddies were led by Dean Duke’s 42. Cory Stoneburner, Josh Kozinski and Dante Razzano each shot 47 for Edwardsburg.
