Author Loreen Niewenhuis will be speaking at the Edwardsburg Branch of the Cass District Library May 7.

Niewenhuis, the author of “A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach” will speak at 6 p.m. Books will be on sale and Niewenhuis will be signing them following the presentation. Light refreshments will also follow the presentation.

Niewenhuis will used photographs and video to highlight her walk along the shores of Lake Michigan. She will talk about the geology, natural history and biology of the lakes as well as to what threatens the “massive ecosystem: invasive species, pollution and destruction of wetlands.

Niewenhuis walked around all of Lake Michigan in 2009. The book speaks to both the geology of the world’s fifth-largest lake and the measure of a person.

Most of the walk was done solo as an adventure in discovery of self and place.

Niewenhuis has an M.S. degree in biological science and because of this, raises important questions about preserving the wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems on which we all depend.
