Top-ranked Mattawan takes pair for Vikings

The Niles softball team was no match for visiting Mattawan Tuesday.

The Vikings were swept by the Wildcats 12-0 and 12-1.

“We went into both sixth innings and that’s where are main struggles began,” Niles coach Ryan Frontczak said. “In game one, we were only down 4-0 and those runs were given up in the first inning after two straight errors. We battled back and held them until the sixth when we let one mistake become five or six.

“You can’t beat the No. 1 team in Michigan playing the way we did. In game two, it was much of the same. We had two bad innings and could not stop the bleeding. You can’t only get four hits in a doubleheader and expect to win.”

Megan McKeel suffered the loss in the opening game, while Molly VanDeKeere took the loss in the nightcap.

“We have to work as a team and get out of the big inning,” Frontczak said. “We flinched and they poured it on. We will get after it though. We played well at times even though the score did not show it.”
