MATTAWAN — The Niles girls track team defeated Portage Central and Mattawan in its season and Big 16 Conference West Division opener Tuesday.

The Vikings defeated Portage Central 81.5-77.5 and the host Wildcats 100.5-57.5.

The Niles boys team lost to Portage Cenetral 107-55 and to Mattawan 85-76.

Taking first place were Elyse Zimmerman in the 100-meters (13.21), Maya Brookins in the 200-meters (28.18), Paige Chaffin in the 400-meters (1:05.60), Taylor Glenn in the 100 hurdles (18.03) and 300 hurdles (55.21), Emma Doud in the shot put (31-8), Kara Smith in the discus (80-7.5) and Ashley Love in the long jump (14-10).

Niles also won the 400 relay with the team of Brookins, Antonia Palme, Zimmerman and Love (53.8), the 800 relay with the team of Brookins, Ashli Bryant, Chaffin and Zimmerman (1:51.74) and the 1,600 relay with the team of Chaffin, Ellie Burck, Zimmerman and Bryant (4:37.74).

For the boys team, Nick Knoll won the 400 meters (56.11) and Graham Hoppstock won the 800 meters (2:11.83).
