Vikings go 1-1 in season opener

SOUTH BEND — The Niles baseball team went 1-1 to finish third at the Coveleski Stadium Tournament Saturday.

The Vikings were defeated by Penn 7-2 in the opening game of the tournament, but rebounded to hold off LaPorte 10-8 in the wild consolation game.

After falling to the Kingsmen, Niles picked it up and banged out 10 hits and scored 10 runs against the Slicers.

Niles scored two or more runs in four innings, including a three-run fifth.

LaPorte (0-2) finished with eight runs on eight hits. The Slicers scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings and two runs in the third to account for their scoring.

The Vikings’ scored two-runs in the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference.

Connor Glick opened the inning with a single to center and moved to third on a double by Mangus. Tate Rudlaff followed with an RBI single, which advanced Mangus to third where he scored the eventual game-winner on a wild pitch.

Rudlaff and Mangus combined for seven hits and seven RBIs.

Tyler Clutter picked up the victory as he scattered five runs over five innings of work. He allowed five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the opening game, Niles had just five hits  — Taylor Weldy, Tate Brawley, Mangus and two from Brad Miller.

Brawley worked the first four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Rudlaff worked the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

The Vikings return to action after spring break when they host Coldwater in a Big 16 non-divisional doubleheader.
