Dowagiac Board of Education received two retirement notifications Monday night at the middle school from Margaret Schmidt, transportation, and Debbie Heeter, administration.

Schmidt began driving school buses for the district in 1986.

“Margaret has been an important and valued driver of precious cargo for many years,” President Michelle Helmuth-Charles said. “We wish Margaret the best in the next chapter of her life.”

Heeter, assistant to Supt. Dr. Mark Daniel, leaves at the end of June.

She interviewed in January 1998 and worked for four superintendents during those 15 years.

“She will truly be missed,” Helmuth-Charles said. “Not too many people are irreplaceable, but her shoes will be hard to fill.”
