‘Wolverine Conference for a Cause’ Feb. 15

The Wolverine Conference will band together Feb. 15 to help raise money for the Wes Leonard Heart Team.

Wes Leonard was the 16-year-old Fennville basketball standout who collapsed on the basketball court last season and later died after scoring the game-winning shot in overtime.

The story drew national attention.

Vicksburg Athletic Director Mike Roy watched as Fennville played Schoolcraft in the Class C regional semifinals in his gym. He saw a packed house and knew just how much Leonard meant to the Fennville community.

The Wes Leonard Heart Team travels around the state to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest. Roy and the Wolverine Conference came up with an idea that will help raise money for the organization.

All 12 schools will hold the “Wolverine Conference for a Cause.” The girl/boys basketball doubleheaders will have commemorative short-sleeved T-shirts for sale for a minimum donation of $12. A long-sleeve T-shirt will be sold for $20. Fans who wear “Wolverine Conference for a Cause” shirts to the game Feb. 15 will be admitted free of charge.

Dowagiac will travel to Edwardsburg for its doubleheader. The girls’ game begins at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Businesses may also get involved. The league is offering corporate sponsorships.

• Heart of Golf: $300, 36 T-shirts

• Big Hearted: $200, 24 T-shirts

• Heart Warming: $100, 12 T-shirts.

Shirts should be available beginning today and will be on sale at all Wolverine Conference schools.
