Janet C. Walker, 77, of Cassopolis, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in Borgess Hospital,
Kalamazoo.
She was born Aug. 23, 1935, in Calvin Township, to Rudolph and Hope
(Jeffries) Newsome.
She married her soul mate, Abraham Walker in 1971 in Michigan.
He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by: her parents; one
daughter, Michelle “Shelly” James; one son, Rodney Warren James; and one grandson,
Alexander Walker.
Janet held a variety of positions, eventually becoming the owner, with her husband
Abraham, of the A&J Party Store in Vandalia. She also became the Postmaster of
Vandalia.
She definitely enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre and bid whist. She
enjoyed summertime with her family at the lake reading her books. She used to water
ski and loved to swim.
Janet will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by: three sons, Edwin
G. (Sheena) Johnson III, of Cassopolis, Randy (Beth) James of Cassopolis and Adam
C. Walker of Elkhart, Ind.; six grandchildren, Maria (Robert) McClenney of Kalamazoo,
Edwin (Anna) Johnson IV, of Plainwell, Janet (Eric) Steward of Kalamazoo, Levonica
James of Fayetteville, N.C., Michelle James of Cassopolis, Brandon James of
Cassopolis; and five great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 2 until 6p.m.
in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis.
Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. David Johnson officiating.
Mrs. Walker will be laid to rest beside her late husband, Abraham Walker, in Bethel
Cemetery, Calvin Township.
