Showdown: Vikings hosting Lancer with title on the line

Last Wednesday the Niles wrestling team wrapped up at least a share of the Big 16 West Division championship.

The No. 5-ranked Vikings swept host Portage Central and Portage Northern, while Lakeshore lost to Portage Central to give Niles a piece of the championship.

Now, the Lancers would love nothing more than to upset the Vikings in Niles’ home finale Wednesday night.

Lakeshore needs to beat Niles to share the championship. Both teams come into the match a bit banged up.

“It should be a good dual,” Niles coach Todd Hesson said. “They have some solid kids from 119 to 160. We seem to have a lot of the match-ups, but you never know. We have come out ahead of them everywhere we have been, but they are our arch rivals and you never know.

The Vikings (28-1) are coming off their first loss of the season. Niles was defeated by No. 8-ranked (Division 3) Shelby in the finals of the Lakeshore Super Duals Saturday.

The Lancers went 1-3.

“We’re banged up and they’re banked up,” Hesson pointed out.

Niles will be without two of its regular starters as Casey Burandt is sidelined with a broken hand he sustained Jan. 5 and Daniel Sierra dislocated his elbow Saturday.

“We will see how the kids come off of our first loss, but I think we will be okay,” Hesson said.

The dual will feature the Niles and Lakeshore MYWAY programs competing at 5:30 p.m. Hesson said there will be 15 to 20 matches. The JV matches will also be going on at the same time.

The varsity dual is scheduled to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
