Dowagiac Police Department took a suspect into custody Saturday night after a short vehicle pursuit ended when the 20-year-old Dowagiac resident struck a house.

Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson reports that at approximately 8:40 p.m. Jan. 19, police attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle for a speeding violation on East Prairie Ronde near McOmber Street.

The driver began to flee, traveling east on Prairie Ronde and attempting to turn right onto McOmber Street.

The vehicle was traveling too fast and slid off the road into a yard and struck the front of a residence in the 700 block of East Prairie Ronde Street.

The driver then fled on foot through several yards and was eventually apprehended by Dowagiac police a short time later.

There was no one home at the residence. Police said the foundation and front porch sustained minor damage.

The driver was taken to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital to be examined, then lodged at Cass County Jail.

The suspect was lodged on charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing police, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and driving with no driver’s license.

Police withheld the driver’s name pending arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court.

All charges are pending authorization by the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
