Jeff Harrell hopes The Country Kitchen can succeed where Crossroads Family Restaurant could not.

Harrell, who helped run Crossroads Restaurant before it closed due to slow business in October, is now managing The Country Kitchen, which opened in late December in the same location as Crossroads, 1201 Barron Lake Rd. in Howard Township.

“It’s been hit and miss here with restaurants. Crossroads started off like somebody lit a fire under her… but it fizzled out after a year,” Harrell said. “I think once we prove ourselves as The Country Kitchen and get away from the bad karma that had happened here with Crossroads, I think we’ll have a real loyal following.”

Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Harrell said the building’s owner, Gary Maxam, paid for renovation work to the entire inside of the restaurant. Renovations to the outside are expected to take place this spring.

The Country Kitchen offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with breakfast offered all day.

Harrell said some of the dining highlights include a $2.99 breakfast special every day that includes two eggs, potato, bacon or sausage and toast.

The restaurant also offers an all-you-can-eat fish special every Friday from 11 a.m. to close for $5.95 that includes a choice of potato and side salad.

Harrell said they plan to start a salad bar in the next few weeks.

“We are also going to put a hot bar in and try an all-you-can-eat pizza night. We’ll do a little bit of everything here,” he said.

The County Kitchen, which employs eight people, also offers pizza for dine-in or carryout.

“We want everyone to come give us a try,” Harrell said.
