Chieftains open West Division play with win

COLOMA — Dontel Highsmith scored a game-high 18 points as the Dowagiac boys basketball team opened up Wolverine Conference West Division play with a 54-37 win over Coloma Friday night.

The Chieftains (2-0) trailed the Comets (0-1) 11-6 after one quarter, but rallied in the second to take a 25-21 lead at the half.

Dowagiac continued to outscore Coloma in the final 16 minutes and pulled away to the victory. The Chieftains led 36-27 heading into the final quarter.

Besides Highsmith’s total, Dowagiac also got 11 points from D.J. Hunt and nine points from Kyle Solloway.

The Comets were led by Andrew Steinhoff’s 13 points.

The Dowagiac JV basketball team defeated Coloma 62-55.

Keoante Blackamore led the Chieftains with 22 points, while DaQuan Brooks added 11.
