CENTREVILLE — A fast start by the Brandywine Bobcats was good enough to win the championship of the Centreville Tip-off Classic Wednesday night.

The Bobcats (2-0) poured in 21 points while holding Howardsville Christian to five on its way to a 64-56 victory.

Brandywine, which has now scored 60 points in the opening quarter in two games, led 34-21 at halftime and 55-39 heading into the final eight minutes of the contest.

Howardsville (1-10) outscored the Bobcats 17-9 in the fourth quarter, which did not sit well with Brandywine coach Josh Hood.

“We got off to another great start, but then I guess we thought we could coast,” he said. “We still have girls learning how to play a full game at a fast pace. I was disappointed with our defensive effort. We have got to learn how to play defense without fouling. Twenty fouls is way too many.”

Senior Mackenzie Shelton turned in a well-rounded performance with 15 points, 12 assists and eight steals. Brooke Smith also scored 15 points while Victoria Knight tossed in 10 points for the second straight night.

Autumn Johnson had 10 points to lead Howardsville Christian.

The Brandywine JV team also captured a tournament championship at Centreville. The Bobcats won their season opener 60-21 and then followed that up with a 61-17 win Wednesday.
