Voters in Tuesday’s general election rejected all six state ballot proposals, including Michigan’s emergency manager law — the only proposal that would not amend the state constitution.
As of early Wednesday afternoon, with 96 percent of precincts reporting, here were the results:
• Proposal 1, which would have allowed the state to appoint an emergency manager in times of financial crisis, was rejected by 52 percent of voters.
• Proposal 2, which would have given public and private employees the constitutional right to collectively bargain, was turned down by 58 percent of voters.
• Proposal 3, which would have required utilities to make at least 25 percent of their electricity through renewable energy sources, was rejected by 63 percent of voters.
• Proposal 4, which would have amended the state constitution to allow home care providers limited collective bargaining, was turned down by 57 percent of voters.
• Proposal 5, which would have required a supermajority vote in the state House and Senate to raise state taxes, was defeated with a 69 percent “no” vote.
• Proposal 6, which would require voters to approve a new bridge or tunnel from Michigan to Canada, was rejected by 59 percent of voters.
Locally, voters had different views of the proposals.
The majority of Cass County voters said “yes” to proposals 1, 5 and 6, while rejecting the rest.
In Berrien County, voters approved proposals 1 and 6, but rejected the rest. Note: Berrien County results were taken early Wednesday afternoon, with 82.4 precincts reporting.
