Loretta Lynn gives a single performance Nov. 18 at the Lerner Theatre in Elkhart.

Country music legend and American icon Loretta Lynn is coming to Michiana.

The well-known singer, songwriter will do one performance on Nov. 18 at the historic Lerner Theatre, 410 S. Main St., in Elkhart, Ind. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Born in poverty in Butcher Hollow, Ky., Loretta Lynn had four children by the age of 20 and then became arguably the most popular female singer in country music history.

Lynn’s 1970 hit record “Coal Miner’s Daughter” led to the 1976 release of her autobiography by the same name, which topped The New York Times’ bestselling list, and was followed by the Academy Award winning movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Released in 1980 and starring Sissy Spacek, Tommy Lee Jones and Levon Helm, the movie traced Lynn’s well-known story of rags to riches.

Loretta is widely regarded as a pioneer in country music, with many songs written from the female point of view, as well as with a sense of humor. She began her music career in 1961 with her first single, “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl.”

From there, Lynn went on to create more than 50 top 10 singles over her storied career, including: “One’s On The Way,” “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ With Lovin’ On Your Mind,”,”Fist City,” “When You’re Lookin’ At Me, You’re Lookin’ At Country” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man.”

Her 1966 song, “Dear Uncle Sam,” was one of the first records to question the human costs of the Vietnam War. In 1973, Loretta Lynn appeared on the cover of Newsweek magazine.

Loretta’s 2004 comeback album “Van Lear Rose” was produced by rock singer/songwriter/producer Jack White of The White Stripes and included the hit single, “Portland, Oregon.”

Lynn’s performance is presented by Pacific Coast Concerts.
