Niles Charter Township trick-or-treaters will be soliciting candy on Halloween — from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31— same as in the City of Niles.

The township board set the trick-or-treat time during Monday night’s meeting.

Leaf blower purchased

The board also purchased for $4,000 from Fillmore Equipment a John Deere leaf blower to mount on the parks department mower.

“The one we had is about 20 years old, and the motor is blown,” Treasurer Jim Ringler said.

Delinquent taxes

Delinquencies placed on winter tax rolls include: sewer usage, $183,339; water, $922.; 11th Street special assessment district, $43,739., totaling $228,001; and, from code enforcement, demolition fees, $12,180; mowing, $2,000; and debris removal, $1,220, totaling $15,415.

Ringler said the sewer delinquency “is not far off from what it is usually. It can be anywhere from $120,000 to $140,000. I’ve not seen $200,000. It’s about 99 percent collectible because it’s spread over a lot of properties.”

Engineering update

The board reviewed the Third Street engineering update from Wightman and Associates in Benton Harbor of how the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail will cross U.S. 12.

Successful mowing

Berrien Teachers Credit Union, 1501 S. 11th St., sent a letter lauding Trustee Richard Noble for his assistance in getting weeds trimmed that impaired visibility. “Dick sent a letter to state Sen. John Proos explaining his concerns for the potential hazard. Later that day, the overgrowth was cut down,” the letter stated. “TCU applauds Dick Noble for his diligence, hard work and dedication to keeping the people of Niles Charter Township safe.”
