Niles power outage blamed on bad circuit

A faulty circuit running under the Grant Street Bridge caused a power outage for all of downtown Niles and some outlying neighborhoods early Friday morning.

Randy Stevens, Niles electric superintendent, said power went out at 12:04 a.m. and was fully restored by 2:30 a.m.

Approximately 300 homes and businesses were affected.

The outage occurred at the Broadway Substation, located behind the old police station on Grant Street. Utility workers determined the cause to be a failure in an underground circuit that goes under the Grant Street Bridge.

Power has been temporarily unloaded from the Broadway Substation to other substations as utility crews work to fix the faulty Grant Street Bridge circuit.

Stevens said the circuit likely failed due to its advanced age.
