The Dowagiac cross country teams just missed out on a sweep at the Wolverine Conference Triangular it hosted Tuesday.

The Chieftain boys team ended up in a 28-28 tie with Coloma, but the Comets were awarded the victory on the tiebreaker. Paw Paw did not field a full team and lost to both Dowagiac and Coloma.

The Redskins edged the Chieftains 27-28 in the girls race. Coloma did not field a full team and lost to both Paw Paw and Dowagiac.

Paw Paw’s Tony Westerhoff was the top individual finisher in the boys race as he posted a time of 18:57. Coloma’s Ryan Cade was second in 19:07 and Dowagiac’s Ben Thompson third in 19:45.

Dean Klann finished fourth for Dowagiac with a time of 19:57 and DeYonte Sullivan eighth with a time of 20:59. Sean Thompson was 10th with a time of 21:33.

Kayla DePierre was the class of the field in the girls race as her time of 19:13 was more than two minutes better than runner-up Kayla Groteleuschen, also of Paw Paw, who ran a time of 21:37.

Dowagiac’s Holly Luth and Christina Preston were fourth and fifth respectively with times of 23:18 and 23:50. Paige Schaus finished eighth (26:17), Katie Murphy ninth (26:39) and Cali Rank 10th (26:43).

Heartbreaking team results with heartwarming performances is a good way to up up the night,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “We knew the races would be veary close and we did a great job competing. It pushed us to a lot of encouraging performances.

“It was great to see Ben and Dean break 20 minutes on the boys side. Holly Luth had her best race since last year’s regional.”
